Accelerated Reader is a computer program that monitors student's comprehension of books they read (AR may only be accessed on school computers). Each book is assigned a reading level and point value. Students are assigned a ZPD (zone of proximal development--reading level).
Students earn an Honor Book for every 50 AR points they earn (1st grade--25 points). Their honor book will have their name printed on the inside of the book and the book is placed in the library when they return it. They also receive a paperback book and a bookmark to keep.
Mason Elementary/Jr. High also awards AR Gift Certificates to student in grades 2-8 participating in the AR Program. Students earn 15 cents per AR point up to $25. AR Gift Certificates may be redeemed at our December and May Scholastic Book Fairs. Students must have a clear library account for Gift Certificates to be valid.
Students in 2nd-4th grades earning 75 AR points and 5th-8th graders earning 100 AR points are invited to Pizza at the City Park at the end of the school year.
