Meet Mr. McFarland

My classes are language/culture classes aimed at assisting students in genuine language acquisition. My goal for students is that they leave Mason High School with a foundation in Spanish that will promote their success in the language, be it in continued university studies, study/travel abroad opportunities, or in their profession. Students are expected to participate in all manner of activities involved in language and culture including: speaking, listening, writing, reading, and numerous kinesthetic activities such as dance and sports. We literally taste the culture as we explore the cuisine of various regions, and we inundate ourselves with the rich history, literature, and music that comprises el Mundo Hispano. When possible, our studies culminate in a summer trip abroad to allow students an authentic contextual experience that will hopefully ignite their desire to be life-long language students. To date students have traveled with me to Chiapas (MX), Costa Rica, and Spain.

Mr. McFarland's Philosophy:
I believe in teaching from virtue, an intrinsic ability that only comes from being directly involved in one’s field. I have taught Spanish since 2004 and have been involved in the Spanish language and culture for over 20 years.  I currently hold a M.Ed. with an emphasis in bilingual education and work steadily in Chiapas, Mexico instructing Spanish literacy to the indigenous populations. I have worked in my field as an interpreter/translator for a manufacturing company and in international sales for the same. I regularly engage the Spanish language in the areas of agriculture, religion, travel, and entertainment through my various involvements within the community and abroad. From this platform, I will strive to deliver practical, applicable material to your student that will translate into success beyond the classroom.
